If someone loses a signed off title, or someone steals your signed off title, getting a replacement is a pain. Future tip - on the bigger purchases in life, make sure to get that thing put into your name, just in case something like this comes up. If you are in the second scenario, just know that you can get the replacement, but it's more complicated. I'll hope you are in the first scenario, as it is much much easier to get a replacement title for something in your name. If the car is less than 10 years old, you will need federal secure odometer statements too. You will likely need a replacement NY title and releases/bills of sale from the people on the title. Do they have a copy of the old title? Name and address of any former owners or lienholders? After the dealership, contact NY DMV, explain your situation and ask what steps you will need to take to get a replacement title. When using this form to request a duplicate title by mail, you must include a photocopy of your identification. If you didn't get it titled in your name, you're going to need help and the dealership is a good place to start - hopefully they have records over 3 years old. Include a 14.00 Idaho title fee with this completed application. At a DMV office a completed Vehicle Registration/Title Application (MV-82) or Application for Title (MV-82TON) proof of identity such as a NYS License, Permit. Some states have this, some don't, but it doesn't hurt to ask. If you send via mail, make your check payable to DMV. Let them know that you have moved to CA and see if there is any process to 'expedite' the title since you now live out of state and need the title for title and registration purposes in your new state.
